Frequently Asked Questions
Is ChainMail free?
ChainMail offers a 7-day free trial with full functionality. After the trial, an annual subscription is required. No credit card is needed to start the trial.
Does ChainMail store my emails on your servers?
No. ChainMail is a local-first application. Your emails are cached on your own computer and never sent to our servers. We connect directly to Gmail's API and all data stays on your machine.
Why does ChainMail need so many Google permissions?
Each permission corresponds to a core feature of the email client. For example, gmail.modify lets you read and organize email, gmail.compose lets you send email, and contacts enables recipient autocomplete. See our Privacy Policy for a full breakdown of each scope and its purpose.
How do I sign in with Gmail?
When you launch ChainMail, click "Sign in with Google." This opens your system browser where you authorize the app using Google's official OAuth flow. We never see your Google password.
Can I use ChainMail with multiple Gmail accounts?
Currently, ChainMail supports one Gmail account at a time. Multi-account support is planned for a future release.
How does AI email drafting work?
ChainMail supports "Bring Your Own Key" (BYOK) AI drafting. You provide your own API key from a supported provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Grok, OpenRouter, or local Ollama). The AI request goes directly from your computer to the provider — we are never involved. Your API key is encrypted and stored locally.
What happens to my data if I uninstall ChainMail?
Uninstalling removes all locally cached data, settings, and encrypted tokens from your computer. To also revoke Gmail access, visit your Google Account permissions and remove ChainMail.
How do I activate my license key?
Open ChainMail, go to Settings > License, paste your license key, and click Activate. Your license is verified online and cached locally so the app works offline.
Can I transfer my license to a new computer?
Yes. Go to Settings > License on your old device and click Deactivate. Then activate on your new device. Each license key has a limited number of active devices — deactivating frees up a slot.
Is ChainMail available for Mac or Linux?
Currently, ChainMail is available for Windows (x64). Mac support is planned. Linux support is under consideration based on demand.
How do I report a bug?
Email us at admin@chainmail.online with a description of the issue, your Windows version, and steps to reproduce it. Screenshots are always helpful.
