Beta Access

Why do I need to be added as a beta tester?

ChainMail connects to your Gmail account via Google's OAuth system. Before Google verifies and approves an app, only users who have been explicitly added as test users in Google's developer console can sign in. This is a Google requirement, not a ChainMail limitation.

How to Get Beta Access

  1. Send us your Gmail address
Email admin@chainmail.online with the subject "Beta Access Request" and include the Gmail address you want to use with ChainMail.
  2. We'll add you as a test user
We'll add your Gmail address to ChainMail's Google OAuth test user list. This usually takes less than 24 hours.
  3. You'll receive a confirmation
Once you're added, we'll reply to confirm. You can then download ChainMail and sign in with Google normally.

What to Expect During Sign-In

Because ChainMail is not yet verified by Google, you'll see a warning screen during the OAuth sign-in flow. This is normal for apps in testing:

1

Google shows "This app isn't verified"

This warning appears because ChainMail is pending Google's verification review. It does not mean the app is unsafe.

2

Click "Advanced" then "Go to ChainMail (unsafe)"

Google labels all unverified apps this way. Once our verification is approved, this screen will no longer appear.

3

Grant the requested permissions

ChainMail will ask for Gmail access permissions. These are the same scopes documented in our Privacy Policy. Review them and click "Allow".

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ChainMail safe to use during beta?

Yes. The "unverified app" warning is a standard Google screen for any app that hasn't completed Google's OAuth review process. ChainMail is a local-first application — your emails are cached on your computer and never sent to our servers. You can review exactly what data ChainMail accesses in our Privacy Policy.

How long until Google verifies ChainMail?

Google's verification process typically takes 4–6 weeks. Once approved, anyone with a Gmail account can sign in without being added as a test user, and the "unverified app" warning will disappear.

Is there a limit to how many beta testers can be added?

Google allows up to 100 test users during the unverified period. We're managing this list actively, so please only request access if you intend to try ChainMail.

Can I use a Google Workspace (business) account?

Yes, as long as your Google Workspace admin allows third-party app access. Send us your Workspace email address and we'll add it the same way.

I got an error saying "access blocked" or "not a test user"

This means your Gmail address hasn't been added to the test user list yet. Email us at admin@chainmail.online and we'll get you added.

Will I need to do anything when Google approves ChainMail?

No. Once verification is complete, ChainMail will work the same way but without the "unverified app" warning. Your existing setup and data are unaffected.
